Suspect arrested for stabbing of Brooklyn community activist

The 18-year-old man suspected in the grisly random stabbing death of a beloved social justice activist in Brooklyn was taken into custody Thursday morning after police seized a knife and the sweatpants the suspect is believed to have been wearing during the early morning slaying. law enforcement sources said.

The person of interest, identified as Brian Dowling, was captured when NYPD officers executed a search warrant at a home on Lafayette Avenue near Malcolm X Boulevard; It’s just down the street from where 32-year-old Ryan Carson was stabbed to death early Monday. Sources told The Post he has a girlfriend.

Sources said officers searched for clothing allegedly worn by the suspect during the videotaped attack and found both Dowling and his dark-colored “Champion” tracksuit in video of the attack inside the apartment.

Police also found a knife in the apartment and will work to determine if it was the murder weapon, sources said.

Law enforcement sources had previously described a “mentally disturbed” teenager as the main person of interest in Carson’s murder, who was attacked just before 4 a.m. Monday near a B38 bus stop in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police said Carson, a longtime campaign organizer for the New York Public Interest Research Group, and his girlfriend were on their way home from a wedding on Long Island when the senseless attack took place.

Disturbing surveillance footage obtained by The Post showed the attacker randomly targeting Carson, forcing the community advocate to stand up between the stranger and his girlfriend.

The angry man shouted “I’ll kill you!” He can be heard shouting. Before the two fought, Carson eventually rolled over the bench at the bus stop when the attacker pulled out a knife and stabbed him three times, according to cops and video.

Carson was lying crouched on the ground when the attacker turned towards his girlfriend and spat at her.

An unidentified woman who police say recognizes the suspect then appears in the corner of the frame and begs the knife-wielding man not to “hurt her,” repeating something like “Brian.”

Authorities said Carson died from a stab wound to his heart.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a news conference Wednesday that police had identified the alleged perpetrator but were “pending probable cause to make that arrest.”

Dowling was issued three summonses in 2022 (two for disorderly conduct) and was the victim of a robbery in 2021, sources said.

Sources said he was also listed in an incident report about a July incident in which he claimed his aunt smashed objects in his girlfriend’s house after a fight and described him as mentally disturbed while calling 911.
